Questions, answered

Do I really need a separate grinder?

Yes — a burr grinder is the single biggest upgrade. Pre-ground coffee goes stale within days and can't be dialed in for your brewer. Pair any setup here with the Encore for brewed coffee, or the Encore ESP for espresso.

Should I start with espresso or pour-over?

Pour-over or AeroPress. They cost far less, are more forgiving, and teach you to taste extraction. Espresso is a bigger commitment in both money and skill — come to it once you know what a good cup tastes like.

What is the "golden ratio"?

A starting point from the SCA: brew to land in its ideal zone of 18–22% extraction and 1.15–1.45% strength, which for most methods works out to roughly 1 gram of coffee per 16–18 grams of water. Brew there first, then adjust stronger or weaker to your taste.
