Shelter

A 3-season roof that pitches in ten minutes.

★ Top pick Weekend car camping

Coleman Sundome Camping Tent with Rainfly, 2/3/4/6 Person, Sets Up in 10 Mins

The default margin anchor for the Shelter facet: cheap, wildly popular, fast to pitch, and good enough for the trips most weekend campers actually take. It's a freestanding 3-season dome with an included rainfly and a welded WeatherTec floor, and it costs a fraction of a backpacking tent. Set expectations, not storms: it handles normal rain and mild weather, condensation is normal in any tent (ventilate, don't seal it shut), and it is not built for winter, snow loads, or gram-counting on the trail.

3-SEASON DOME · RAINFLY + WELDED FLOOR · ~10-MIN PITCH · 2–6 PERSON

Ultralight backpacking

Naturehike Cloud Up Pro 2-Person Ultralight Backpacking Tent (Freestanding, Double-Wall, 20D Nylon)

This is the shelter for the version of The Weekend Camper who walks past the car and up the trail. Where the Coleman Sundome is a ~7.5 lb drive-up dome, the Cloud Up Pro is a genuine backpacking tent: freestanding, double-wall, 20D nylon, and a minimum weight of about 3 lb that packs down to roughly the size of a water bottle. It is the honest value pick, not the ultralight king. You are trading premium tents' larger interiors, tougher fabrics, and lower weight for a price around a quarter of theirs. The 20D fabric is thin and wants careful campsite selection, the interior is cozy for two adults, and it is still a 3-season tent, not a mountaineering shelter. But for shorter backpacking trips it hits the sweet spot between a heavy drive-up dome and an expensive ultralight shelter.

~3 LB FREESTANDING · DOUBLE-WALL 20D · 3-SEASON · PACKS ~16"
